Trump Indictment
In two days Donald John Trump, malignant narcissist, sociopath, and all-around lousy excuse for a human being, will appear in Federal court in Miami, Florida, charged with 31 counts of violating the Espionage Act as well as 6 counts related to his lengthy efforts to conceal his criminal actions. Having lost his civil case against E. Jean Carroll for rape and defamation (which Trump, in his usual way, is appealing) and as well as a 34-count felony indictment brought by Manhattan Alvin Bragg in the hush money affair with a porn star, Mr. Trump seems to be in a bad way legally.
But sociopaths and narcissists soldier on. Trump appeared at two events (in Georgia and North Carolina) to audiences proclaiming his innocence and how he was a victim of weaponization of the government against him. The adoring audiences in those former states of the Confederacy ate it up, whoopin and applauding. Exactly how often does his criminality and malfeasance need to be revealed for this low-life to be gone from our body politic? I for one do not know.
I do think that Trump is in a bad box, however. The special prosecutor, Jack Smith, seems tough and relentless in his getting to the truth. If you have not yet read the indictment he brought this week, I urge you to do so. You can find it here and here but a Google search will bring it up in many places. And definitely look at the photos contained in the indictment, which you can find here. The photos themselves really tell a tale of total criminal malfeasance on Trump’s part. I spent a career in the U.S. Navy and the last command I was part of dealt with national security. We handled classified information every day and took that responsibility seriously. I have been in SCIFs (SCIF stands for sensitive compartmented information facility); this sort of sign was on the building where our SCIF was located.
The guards all carried loaded sidearms and I didn’t think it was for fun. Of course as the president, Trump just blew past this and for four years (and beyond) he ignored the protocols because… the laws excluded the president. While Reality Winner spent 5 years in prison for a single document stolen from the government (and I am not excusing her action, believe me), Trump has 31 such counts against him.
Of course, other investigations of Trump’s flouting laws remain under investigation, including the granddaddy of them all, his role in the January 6 insurrection. That is also being pursued by Jack Smith and it remains to be seen what will happen there.
Trump remains the front-runner of the cult rump of the former Republican Party with lots of noncritical thinkers there supporting him. There are members of the House of Representatives who seem to be dog-whistling (loudly) for Trump supporters to repeat January 6. This is a perilous time. But if the rule of law means anything, it certainly means the behavior in that 49-page indictment filed this week must be brought to trial swiftly. Will Trump escape? Teflon Don has danced away so many times in the past. Hopefully he will find the banana peel on this one.
